This programmer is OS independent (stk500 V2 protocol) and can flash any Atmel avr microcontroller with In-System Programming capabilities. It can flash microcontrollers running at supply voltages from 3V to 5.5V.

This programmer hardware looks to the programmer software (avrdude, avrstudio, ...) just like a stk500v2 on a virtual com-port.
This kit includes:

A high quality printed circuit board (double sided,through-hole connections, gold plated). The FTDI ft232rl SMD chip is already soldered to the board.
Components: Capacitors, resistors, USB-A connector, crystal, LED, 30cm cable with tuxgraphics programmer SIL header
Bootable CD (like knoppix Linux), tuxgraphics Linux AVR programming CD
Documentation: pinout description of the components, circuit diagram, resistor color codes, drawing and photo of the PCB with all the components

The tuxgraphics ISP-connector which is attached to the cable is a small and compact SIL header. If you do not want to program an tuxgraphics board then just add an adapter. We have adapters for all well known ISP socket types.

The CD that comes with the kit includes the avr-gcc tool chain. The CD is independent of the operating system and software on your PC. It is a bootable CD with a graphical desktop and the complete C-Language programming environment (avr-gcc and avr-libc-1.6.4).
The CD includes (besides the knoppix booting capability):

AVRstudio 4 for windows; to use the AvrUsb500 under windows
Windows drivers for the USB interface of the AvrUsb500v2
avrdude programmer pre-compiled for MacOSX (on PowerPC and Intel)
MacOSX (on PowerPC and Intel) drivers for the USB interface of the AvrUsb500v2

Note that the CD is ready to use without prior installation. The installation of software components is optional.
CD System requirements (tuxgraphics CD version 2.X):

CD-rom, IDE connected. The CD does currently not work on some SATA conneced CD/DVD drives but boots fine from any IDE connected CD/DVD drive.
Intel CPU with 400MHz or better
USB interface
Minimum 256Mb of Ram.
Note: the CD will not boot on a Mac.

Note: The atmega8/atmega8a is not included in this kit. You need in addtion an atmega8a microcontroller to build the AvrUsb500v2. There is an option at the end of this page to order a pre-loaded atmega8a. The CD that comes with this kit is prepared to load the initial firmware into the atmega8/atmega8a on the AvrUsb500v2 board. Please do not try to use any other chip than atmega8 or atmega8a to build the AvrUsb500v2.
